MICRO NATIONS
Added on: 21st Nov 2015
LIBERLAND
This small micro nation was founded on 13 April 2015 by Czech
citizen Vít Jedlička due to a Serbia-Croatian border dispute. So far
Vít has received nearly 250,000 applications for citizenship.
PRINCIPALITY OF HUTT RIVER
This small plot of land supposedly seceded from Australia in April
1970 and its leader calls himself Prince Leonard. Australia,
however, does not recognize the micro nation.
GRAND DUCHY OF WESTARCTICA
When American Travis McHenry supposedly found a loophole in
the Antarctic Treaty he ended up claiming a piece of Marie Byrd Land.
GLACIER REPUBLIC
Found by Greenpeace activists in 2014 near the border of Argentina
and Chile the intention has been to draw attention to a lack of
protection for glaciers in the Andes Mountains.
CONCH REPUBLIC
On April 23 1982, Key West Florida declared itself independent of the
United States. This was a tongue-in-cheek gesture of protest to the
US Highway Patrol setting up checkpoints in the region which
were detrimental to tourism.
REPUBLIC OF MINERVA
Millionaire Michael Oliver decided he wanted his own country so he
poured sand onto a reef off the coast of Tonga in an attempt to raise
his new nation’s flag on dry ground. Not long afterwards though, the
Tongan military came by and removed the flag.
KINGDOM OF ENENKIO
This tiny micro nation was founded on the US territory of Wake Island
by a separatist group of Marshall Islanders. As with several other
micro nations on this list it has been labelled a scam to sell fake
passports and documents.
FREETOWN CHRISTIANIA
Founded in 1971, Freetown Christiania is a self-proclaimed autonomous
neighbourhood in Copenhagen, Denmark. It has roughly 850 residents
and considers itself to be the ultimate hippie paradise.
PRINCIPALITY OF SEBORGA
For some reason this small Italian town has been left out of nearly
every official treaty for over 1,000 years which led residents to declare
de facto independence. Of course, the only thing this really
accomplished was to boost their tourist industry.
