SHISHALDIN (USA)
Found in Alaska, this remote volcano offers the occasional adventurer
a rare 2,000 metre (6,000ft) perfectly straight ski run.
COTOPAXI (ECUADOR)
The second highest peak in Ecuador is also home to one of the
only equatorial glaciers on Earth.
PITON DE LA FOURNAISE (REUNION)
This tiny French speaking island in the Indian Ocean is home to
one of Earth’s most violent volcanoes.
MAELIFELL VOLCANO (ICELAND)
Found on a glacier, this volcano’s green surface sticks out
like a sore thumb
SOUFRIÈRE HILLS VOLCANO (MONTESERRAT)
Since the eruption of this volcano in July 1995 more than half of this
Caribbean island’s population has left.
MOUNT ST. HELENS (USA)
Responsible for the most destructive volcanic eruption in US history,
before 1980 it was known as the Mount Fuji of America due to its
conical shape. After the blast though, half the mountain was blown away.
MOUNT RUAPEHU (NEW ZEALAND)
In spite of being active this volcano hosts two ski resorts and also
served as a location for filming The Lord of the Rings.
VOLCÁN POPOCATÉPETL (MEXICO)
One of three mountains in Mexico with glaciers on its peak, this
volcano woke back up in 1990 after several decades of inactivity.
KATLA, HEKLA AND EYJAFJALLAJÖKULL (ICELAND)
Known as the Angry Sisters, when Eyjafjallajökull erupted in 2010 it
sent plumes of smoke as far as western Europe.
